ACP-5 asbestos investigation for NYC permits.

Before the Department of Buildings will issue a permit for most renovation, alteration, or demolition work, the project needs an asbestos determination from a NYC DEP Certified Asbestos Investigator. We survey the space, run the samples, and file the ACP-5 ourselves.

Common questions

ACP-5 questions, answered.

What is an ACP-5?

The ACP-5 is the NYC DEP Asbestos Assessment Report. After surveying the work area, a DEP Certified Asbestos Investigator signs and seals it to state that the area is free of asbestos-containing material, that the material present will not be disturbed, or that the amount to be removed is a minor project.

When does a project need an ACP-5?

Building owners must have a DEP Certified Asbestos Investigator survey the affected area before most renovation, alteration and demolition work. When the result is no ACM, ACM that will not be disturbed, or a minor project, the investigator files an ACP-5 with DEP and it supports the DOB permit application.

What happens if asbestos will be disturbed?

If the work will disturb more than 25 linear feet or more than 10 square feet of asbestos-containing material, it becomes an asbestos project. The owner or authorized agent files an ACP-7 Asbestos Project Notification with DEP at least one week before work starts, and abatement and independent air monitoring follow.

Is an ACP-5 needed for a full-building demolition?

Yes. DOB issues a full demolition permit based on an ACP-5 that confirms the entire building is free of asbestos-containing material. ACP-20 and ACP-21 completion forms are not accepted for that purpose.

Do you work with my expediter?

Yes. We coordinate directly with your expediter or filing representative so the asbestos determination lines up with the DOB application.

Need monitoring too?

When abatement goes ahead, we also provide independent asbestos air and project monitoring. See air and project monitoring.
